Sterilant
A sterilant is a substance or agent used to kill or inactivate microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and their spores. These agents may be chemical or physical, and they can be applied to surfaces, objects, and fluids. Sterilization is a process used to eliminate all living organisms, including spores, from an item or environment. Sterilants are used to reduce the number of microorganisms in a sample to a safe level. Sterilants are used in a variety of healthcare settings to sterilize instruments, equipment, and surfaces. Sterilants are also used for food processing and preparation, and to prevent the spread of disease. Common examples of sterilants include ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, chlorine dioxide, and hydrogen peroxide.
