Pyrogenic
Pyrogenic is a term that refers to a substance or agent that can cause fever. It is typically a bacterial toxin, although other substances, such as certain chemicals, can also be classified as pyrogenic. Pyrogens stimulate the production of the hormone prostaglandin E2, which increases the body’s temperature. This increase in temperature can be beneficial in some cases, such as to fight off a bacterial or viral infection. Pyrogenic substances can also be used to reduce inflammation and as an analgesic. As an analgesic, a pyrogenic agent can be used to reduce pain, as it causes an increase in the body’s temperature, which can block the transmission of pain signals.
