Proteinase Inhibitor
Proteinase Inhibitor (PI) is a type of drug that interrupts the activity of a proteinase enzyme. Proteinases are enzymes that catalyze the breaking down of proteins by cleaving peptide bonds. When PI binds to a proteinase enzyme, it prevents it from breaking down proteins and prevents further damage. This is beneficial in cases where the breakdown of proteins can lead to tissue damage and inflammation. PI can also be used to block the activity of certain viruses that require proteinases for replication. In some cases, PI can even be used to reduce the production of cytokines, which are molecules that are involved in the body’s inflammatory response. By blocking their production, PI can reduce inflammation and help with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
