Lactagogue
A lactagogue (or galactagogue) is a substance that promotes lactation in humans and other mammals. It can also be a substance that increases the flow or production of breast milk. Commonly used lactagogues include herbs, medications, and certain foods. Herbs used as lactagogues include blessed thistle, fennel, fenugreek, goat's rue, and alfalfa. Some medications, such as Metoclopramide, can also be used as lactagogues. Certain foods, such as oats and brewer's yeast, are thought to increase milk production. While their efficacy is disputed, they are generally considered safe to consume while breastfeeding.
