Hypocholesterolemic
Hypocholesterolemic activity is the ability of a substance to reduce the levels of cholesterol in the blood. This activity is beneficial because high levels of cholesterol can lead to an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. This activity can be achieved through several different pathways. First, certain substances can inhibit the absorption of dietary cholesterol from the intestine. Second, these substances can promote the excretion of intestinal cholesterol into the feces. Third, these substances can reduce the production of cholesterol in the liver. Finally, some substances can increase the activity of the enzyme that breaks down cholesterol in the blood. There are many different types of substances that can have hypocholesterolemic activity, including dietary fiber, phytosterols, omega-3 fatty acids, plant sterols, and certain medications.
