Demulcent
A demulcent is an agent that helps to soothe, protect, and soften irritated mucous membranes. It works by forming a protective film over the affected area which helps to reduce inflammation and soothe irritation. Demulcents are commonly used to treat conditions such as sore throat, cough, stomach ulcers, and gastrointestinal inflammation. They can also be used to treat skin irritations such as burns, cuts, and rashes. Demulcents are usually derived from plant sources and are often combined with other herbal or medicinal ingredients to increase their effectiveness. Examples of demulcents include honey, marshmallow root, slippery elm, and licorice root.
