Antiscorbutic
Antiscorbutic is a medicinal activity that refers to the prevention and treatment of scurvy, a vitamin C deficiency disorder. The term antiscorbutic is derived from the Latin words for "against" and "scurvy". Scurvy is caused by a lack of vitamin C in the body, and the symptoms can range from bleeding gums, joint pain and stiffness, fatigue, and skin discoloration. Treatment of scurvy involves increasing the intake of foods and supplements that are high in vitamin C. This can include citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppers, and other fruits and vegetables that contain high levels of vitamin C. Additionally, antiscorbutic medications can be used to increase the body's absorption and utilization of vitamin C. Antiscorbutic drugs, such as ascorbic acid and thiamine, can be taken orally or injected to help treat and prevent the symptoms of scurvy.
