Antidote physostigmine
An antidote is a substance that can counteract or neutralize the effects of a poison or a toxin. Antidote physostigmine is an antidote used to treat poisoning caused by certain types of drugs, such as carbamates and organophosphates. The antidote works by blocking the action of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. When acetylcholine builds up in the body, it can cause muscle spasms, difficulty breathing, and even death in extreme cases. By blocking the action of acetylcholinesterase, the antidote prevents the buildup of acetylcholine, restoring normal function and helping to reverse the effects of the poison. In addition to its use as an antidote, physostigmine can also be used to treat glaucoma and myasthenia gravis.
