Water Retention
Water retention is a condition in which the body retains an abnormally large amount of water. This can be caused by a variety of medical conditions, such as kidney disease, liver disease, heart failure, and certain medications. It can also be caused by pregnancy, poor diet, and hormonal imbalances. The most common symptom of water retention is swelling in the feet, ankles, and/or legs. This swelling is caused by the accumulation of fluid in the tissue, leading to a feeling of heaviness in these areas. Other symptoms may include abdominal bloating, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. If it is caused by a medical condition, then the condition must be treated first. If it is caused by lifestyle factors, such as a poor diet, then dietary changes should be made. Diuretics can also be prescribed to help the body rid itself of excess water. If the cause is unknown, then further testing may be necessary to determine the cause.
