Tylosis

Tylosis is a rare, genetic disorder that affects the skin, eyes, and other organs. It is caused by a mutation in the keratin gene. Symptoms vary from person to person, but commonly include thickening and darkening of the skin on the palms and soles of the feet, as well as the development of skin tags and calluses. Other symptoms may include the development of cysts on the eyelids and ears, nail thickening, and small bumps on the skin. In some cases, the disorder may also cause an increased risk of developing skin cancer. Medical treatment for Tylosis is limited to symptom management. Moisturizers and emollients may be used to help reduce the dryness and itching of the affected skin. In severe cases, a doctor may perform a procedure called cryotherapy (freezing) to remove the thickened skin. Surgery may also be used to remove the cysts or skin tags. Patients may also benefit from the use of sunscreen and sun-protective clothing to prevent skin cancer.
