Spina Bifida

Spina Bifida is a birth defect in which a baby’s spinal cord does not properly close during development in the womb. This can cause damage to the spine, nerve tissue and spinal cord, leading to a range of symptoms such as partial or complete paralysis of the legs, bladder and bowel problems, learning disabilities, and hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain). Surgery is often required to close the opening in the spine, and physical therapy and medications are often necessary to manage the symptoms. Spina bifida can be treated with surgical procedures, physical therapy, and medications, but it cannot be cured.
