Somnambulism
Somnambulism, also known as sleepwalking, is a disorder that causes individuals to involuntarily move and/or perform activities while in a state of sleep. Sleepwalkers are usually in a deep sleep and can display a variety of behaviors, including walking, talking, eating, dressing, and even driving. Sleepwalking episodes typically occur during the first few hours of sleep, although they can occur at any time during sleep. Sleepwalking is thought to be caused by an imbalance in the brain chemicals that regulate sleep. In addition, factors such as stress, sleep deprivation, certain medications, and even genetics can contribute to the development of sleepwalking. Treatment for sleepwalking typically includes relaxation techniques, sleep hygiene, and medication. In some cases, psychotherapy may also be necessary to address the underlying causes of the disorder.
