Scleroderma
Scleroderma, also known as systemic sclerosis, is a chronic connective tissue disorder that affects the body’s connective tissues, including the skin, joints, muscles, and blood vessels. It is an autoimmune disorder, meaning that the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. The main symptom of scleroderma is the hardening and tightening of the skin, which is caused by an increased production of collagen. This can lead to thickening and tightening of the skin on the hands, face, and other areas of the body. Other symptoms include joint pain, muscle weakness, gastrointestinal problems, fatigue, and Raynaud’s phenomenon, which is a condition that causes the fingers and toes to turn white or blue in response to cold temperatures. The exact cause of scleroderma is unknown, but it is thought to be related to genetics and environmental factors. Treatment is aimed at managing symptoms and preventing complications. This may include medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications.
