Scarlet Fever

Scarlet Fever is a contagious bacterial infection caused by a type of Streptococcus bacteria. It is most common in children between the ages of 5 and 15, although anyone can get it. Symptoms include sore throat, fever, red rash, swollen glands in the neck, tonsils and tongue, headache, nausea, and vomiting. The rash can be itchy and have a sandpaper-like texture. It usually starts on the face and neck and then spreads to the chest and back. Scarlet fever is usually treated with antibiotics. It is important to finish all the antibiotics and to stay home until the fever has been gone for at least 24 hours. Contact your doctor if you have any of the symptoms of scarlet fever and they will be able to diagnose and treat it.
