Prurigo
Prurigo is a skin condition characterized by a chronic, intensely itchy rash with multiple small bumps or nodules. It can occur anywhere on the body, but is usually found on the arms, legs, and back. The rash may resemble hives or eczema and can be red or brown in color. The itching can be severe and may interfere with sleep and daily activities. Prurigo is a result of an abnormal immune response in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own skin cells. This triggers inflammation, which results in the itchy rash. Other triggers may include insect bites, certain medications, allergies, infections, and stress. The exact cause of prurigo is unknown. Treatment for prurigo includes topical steroids and antihistamines to reduce itching, and oral medications to reduce inflammation. In some cases, phototherapy may be used to reduce the rash. In more severe cases, systemic immunosuppressants may be prescribed if other treatments have not been successful. It is important to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
