Pityriasis
Pityriasis is a common skin condition that is characterized by scaly, dry patches of skin. It is caused by a fungal infection, most commonly the fungus Malassezia (formerly known as Pityrosporum). It occurs when the fungus, which naturally lives on the skin, grows out of control. The most common symptom of Pityriasis is the presence of dry, scaly patches of skin on the face, scalp, trunk and arms. These patches can range in color from pink to red or brown and may be itchy or even painful. In some cases, the patches can cause a burning sensation. In addition to the scaly patches, Pityriasis can cause hair loss, swelling, and the darkening of the skin around the affected area. This condition is not contagious and does not usually require medical treatment, although in some cases a doctor may prescribe antifungal medications or topical creams to help clear up the infection. Pityriasis is generally a mild condition that can be managed with simple skin care and hygiene practices. Keeping the affected area clean and dry, avoiding potential irritants, and using mild soaps and lotions can all help. In some cases, doctors may recommend antifungal medications or topical creams to help clear up the infection.
