Peritonosis

Peritonitis is an infection of the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), which can be caused by bacteria, a virus, or a fungus. It can also be caused by a ruptured appendix, a puncture of the abdominal wall, or an abdominal surgery. Symptoms of peritonitis include abdominal pain, swelling, fever, nausea and vomiting. If not treated quickly, it can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening infection of the bloodstream. Treatment typically involves antibiotics, pain medications, and surgery to remove the source of the infection. Peritonitis can be life-threatening, so it is important to seek medical attention if you experience any of the symptoms.
