Peptic Ulcer

A peptic ulcer is a sore or ulcer that develops in the lining of the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine, known as the duodenum. Peptic ulcers are caused by a combination of factors, including an infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and the use of certain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Peptic ulcers are very common and can cause severe abdominal pain and other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Treatment for peptic ulcers typically includes antibiotics to kill the H. pylori bacteria, as well as medications to reduce stomach acid, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). In some cases, surgery may be necessary to treat a peptic ulcer that does not respond to medications.
