Neurodystonia
Neurodystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that cause involuntary and sometimes painful body movements or postures. It is believed to be caused by a malfunction in the brain's basal ganglia and/or the nervous system's neurotransmitter systems. Neurodystonia can affect any part of the body, including the face, neck, limbs and torso. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and can range from occasional to continuous. Common symptoms include spasms, tremors, twitches and jerks. Other symptoms include dystonic posturing, rigidity and abnormal movements. Some people may experience pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances and emotional disturbances. Neurodystonia is usually treated with medications, physical therapy, botulinum toxin injections and other therapies, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS). The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. In some cases, surgery may be recommended. It is important to note that there is no cure for neurodystonia, but treatments can help to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
