Myxedema
Myxedema is a condition that occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough of the hormone thyroxine. This condition is most commonly seen in elderly patients, as it is associated with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) in older adults. Symptoms of myxedema include dry skin, puffiness in the face and extremities, lethargy and fatigue, impaired memory and mental functioning, constipation, and a decrease in heart rate. The cause of myxedema is not fully understood, but it is believed to be due to an underlying autoimmune disorder or a decrease in the production of thyroxine. Treatment of myxedema generally includes hormone replacement therapy, which involves taking synthetic thyroxine to replace the missing hormones from the thyroid gland. Other treatments may include lifestyle modifications, such as increasing physical activity or reducing stress. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the thyroid gland. Myxedema is a serious condition, and if left untreated can lead to other serious health problems, such as heart failure and coma. It is important to seek medical attention if you experience any of the symptoms associated with myxedema.
