Mouth Sore

Mouth sores, also known as oral mucositis, are painful sores that can occur inside the mouth. They are usually caused by infection, allergy, or irritation to the delicate tissues inside the mouth. Common causes of mouth sores include viruses, such as the herpes simplex virus, and the human papilloma virus; bacteria, such as streptococcus, staphylococcus, and candida; and irritation from dental appliances, spicy foods, and other things that come into contact with the mouth. Symptoms of mouth sores include redness, swelling, tenderness, and sometimes a burning sensation. Treatment for mouth sores depends on the cause, but may include topical medications, pain relievers, and antibiotics, if necessary.
