Measles
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the measles virus. It is characterized by a red rash on the skin, fever, coughing, runny nose, and a feeling of being generally unwell. The most common complication of measles is pneumonia, which can be life-threatening. Other complications include encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and secondary bacterial infections. Measles is highly contagious and spreads through contact with an infected person’s respiratory secretions, such as saliva or mucus. It can also be spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It is most commonly seen in children but can affect people of all ages. The best way to protect against measles is to get vaccinated. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective at preventing measles. The World Health Organization recommends two doses of the vaccine for optimal protection. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, most people with measles will make a full recovery. However, it is important to seek medical care if you think you may have been exposed to measles, as the virus can cause serious complications.
