Mastocytosis
Mastocytosis is a rare disorder that affects the mast cells of the body. Mast cells are a type of white blood cell that are involved in the body's inflammatory response and the release of substances that cause allergic reactions. In mastocytosis, the mast cells become overactive and can build up in certain organs or tissues. This can cause a wide range of symptoms, including itching, flushing, hives, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. It can also affect the digestive system, the respiratory system, and the skin. The exact cause of mastocytosis is not known, but it is believed to be related to an abnormality in the production of a certain type of mast cell called an intermediate mast cell. This abnormality can be caused by a genetic mutation, an autoimmune response, or exposure to certain drugs or chemicals. Treatment of mastocytosis typically involves taking medications to reduce the number of mast cells or to control the symptoms. In some cases, surgery may be needed to remove the affected tissue.
