Laryngismus stridulus
Laryngismus Stridulus is a condition in which the patient experiences a sudden, involuntary, spasmodic contraction of the vocal cords, leading to a sound like a loud, high-pitched, crowing-type sound. It is a medical emergency and can be life-threatening. The cause of laryngismus stridulus is unknown, but it is believed to be caused by a sudden interruption of the normal nerve impulses to the vocal cords. This can be caused by a variety of factors including stress, trauma, or even an allergic reaction. The most common symptom is the crowing sound that is heard when the vocal cords are spasmodically contracted. Other symptoms may include difficulty breathing, loss of voice, and a choking sensation. Treatment for laryngismus stridulus is typically achieved with a combination of medications and supportive care. Medications used to treat the condition include antispasmodic medications to relax the vocal cords, and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling. In severe cases, a tracheotomy may be necessary to ensure adequate breathing. In addition, supportive care may include humidified air, suctioning, and oxygen therapy. Laryngismus stridulus is a serious medical condition that should be treated immediately. If left untreated, it can lead to respiratory distress and even death.
