Hypochondria
Hypochondria is a mental disorder characterized by a preoccupation with the fear of having or the idea of having a serious medical illness, even when there is no evidence to suggest that the person is actually ill. People with hypochondria will constantly worry about their health and they may experience frequent physical symptoms. They may also continually seek medical advice and tests, sometimes resulting in unnecessary treatments and procedures. Hypochondria is thought to be related to anxiety and depression and is often linked to a lack of confidence and self-esteem. It can be caused by a traumatic event, such as the death of a loved one, or by a past medical experience. People can also develop medical hypochondria due to the influence of family or friends who are overly worried about health or who have had a serious illness. The symptoms of hypochondria include: excessive worrying about health, frequent physical symptoms, excessive checking of the body for signs of illness, seeking numerous medical tests or treatments, and excessive internet research about illnesses. Treatment for hypochondria may involve psychotherapy, medication, or both. The goal of treatment is to help the person manage their anxiety and worry and to develop healthy coping strategies.
