Hyperlactation
Hyperlactation is a condition in which a woman produces more breastmilk than what is considered normal. This condition can occur due to hormonal imbalances, medical conditions, or medications. Women with medical hyperlactation may experience an overabundance of milk production, as well as painful and swollen breasts, and engorgement. Engorgement is an uncomfortable condition in which the breasts become overly full with milk, and can lead to blocked milk ducts and infection if not treated. Treatment options for hyperlactation include decreasing the amount of milk that is being produced. This can be accomplished through medicinal options such as using a medication to suppress lactation or using herbal supplements to reduce milk supply. Alternatively, a woman can manually express her breastmilk by hand or with a breast pump to reduce the amount of milk that is being produced. In addition to reducing the amount of milk being produced, hyperlactation can also be treated through lifestyle changes. Women should ensure that they are eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of fluids to reduce the risk of dehydration. It is also important to take regular breaks while breastfeeding to ensure that the breasts are not over-emptied. Other lifestyle modifications such as wearing well-fitting bras and avoiding tight clothing can also help to reduce milk production. Hyperlactation is a condition that can be overwhelming and uncomfortable for a woman. It is important that she seeks medical advice and works with her healthcare provider to develop an appropriate treatment plan.
