Hypercholesterolemia
Hypercholesterolemia is a medical term that refers to high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is a type of fat found in the body and is essential for proper functioning of the body. It is made in the liver and found in some foods, such as eggs, dairy, and red meat. High levels of cholesterol can build up in the arteries and cause blockages, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. The most common cause of hypercholesterolemia is an unhealthy diet that is high in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol. Other factors can also increase the risk, such as lack of physical activity, smoking, and certain medications. Treatment for hypercholesterolemia usually begins with lifestyle changes, such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking. Medication may also be prescribed to lower cholesterol levels. Some of these medications work by blocking the absorption of cholesterol from the intestines or by decreasing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver.
