Hepatomegaly

Hepatomegaly is an enlargement of the liver. It is the result of an increase in the size of the liver and is typically found by palpation during a physical examination. Depending on the underlying cause, it may be a benign condition, or it may be indicative of a more serious underlying medical condition or disease. Common causes of hepatomegaly include viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, metabolic disorders, congestive heart failure, and certain types of cancer. Diagnosis is generally made based on physical examination, laboratory tests, and imaging studies. Treatment is based on the underlying cause.
