Eclampsia
Eclampsia is a serious medical condition that arises during pregnancy and can lead to seizures, coma and even death. It is caused by high blood pressure in pregnancy, and usually occurs during the later stages of pregnancy or shortly after the baby is born. Symptoms of eclampsia include severe headaches, blurred vision, pain and swelling in the legs, and changes in the amount of urine output. Left untreated, eclampsia can cause seizures, coma, and even death. Treatment for eclampsia involves monitoring blood pressure and taking medications to lower it. Depending on the severity of the condition, a woman may need to be hospitalized and undergo a C-section to deliver the baby. If eclampsia is caught early, it can be managed and the mother and baby can have a healthy outcome.
