Dusgeuzia
Dusgeuzia is a rare medical condition characterized by extreme anxiety, or fear, of swallowing. It is a type of phobia related to food and is classified as an anxiety disorder. Symptoms typically include fear or discomfort when attempting to swallow food or liquid. This fear can cause a person to avoid eating or drinking altogether and can lead to malnutrition or dehydration. Other symptoms may include difficulty initiating a swallow, difficulty swallowing certain foods or liquids, nausea, vomiting, choking, and coughing. Treatment for Dusgeuzia typically involves cognitive-behavioral therapy and relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation. In some cases, medications such as anti-anxiety medications or antidepressants may be used to help manage symptoms.
