Duodenal Ulcer

Duodenal ulcer is a type of peptic ulcer that affects the lining of the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. It is caused by the acid in the stomach coming into contact with the mucosa, the protective lining of the duodenum. When the mucosa is eroded, an ulcer develops. Symptoms of duodenal ulcer include abdominal pain, heartburn, nausea, bloating, and vomiting. Treatment involves medications to reduce the levels of acid in the stomach and antibiotics to fight off any infection. Surgery may be recommended if the ulcer does not respond to medication.
