Dry Socket

Dry socket is a painful dental condition that can occur after a tooth is extracted. It is caused by the loss of the blood clot in the socket, which is normally formed to protect the underlying bone and nerves after the tooth is removed. As a result, the exposed bone and nerve endings become exposed to air, food, liquids, and other irritants, causing intense pain, swelling, and bad breath. Treatment involves rinsing the mouth with a saline solution, and the application of a medicated dressing to the socket to protect the area and promote healing. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to reduce the risk of infections.
