Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that can occur in people with diabetes. It is caused by a combination of high blood sugar levels, prolonged periods of uncontrolled diabetes, and damage to the small blood vessels that nourish the nerves. Symptoms of diabetic neuropathy can include numbness and tingling in the extremities, pain or burning in the extremities, muscle weakness, decreased sensation, and difficulty walking. In some cases, diabetic neuropathy can cause problems with the autonomic nervous system, which controls functions such as blood pressure and digestion. Over time, these problems can lead to serious complications such as organ damage and cardiovascular disease. The good news is that many of the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy can be managed with lifestyle changes, medications, and other treatments.
