Croup

Croup is an infection of the upper airway that can cause a seal-like barking cough, hoarseness, and difficulty breathing. It commonly affects children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years. It is usually caused by a virus, such as the parainfluenza virus, but can also be caused by a bacteria. Symptoms usually begin with a fever and cold-like symptoms, followed by a harsh, seal-like cough. Treatment typically involves humidified air, fluids for hydration, and medications such as corticosteroids and antibiotics. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary to help manage breathing difficulty.
