Cracked Feet

Cracked feet, also known as heel fissures, are a common foot problem that occurs when the skin on the feet dries out and splits. The cracks often appear on the heel, but may also appear on the sides of the feet, the toes or the soles. Cracked feet can be unsightly and uncomfortable, but they are usually not serious. Possible symptoms of cracked feet may include pain, redness, flaking, itching, and bleeding. Cracked feet can be caused by a variety of factors, such as dry air, lack of moisture, and wearing the wrong type of shoes. Other causes can include medical conditions such as diabetes, eczema, psoriasis, fungal infections, thyroid disease, and vitamin deficiencies. Treating cracked feet may involve using moisturizers and humectants, such as petroleum jelly, to keep the skin hydrated. Other treatments may include soaking the feet in warm water, using pumice stones and exfoliating creams, and wearing shoes that fit properly and are made of breathable materials. If the cracked feet are due to a medical condition, then the underlying condition must be treated in order to resolve the problem.
