Cold Sore

A cold sore is a contagious viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It usually appears as a small, red, fluid-filled blister on or around the lips and sometimes on the nose, chin, cheeks, or in the mouth. The area around the sore may also be tender, swollen, and red. Cold sores are very contagious and can be spread through skin-to-skin contact or through contact with saliva. They can also be spread through sharing items such as utensils, drinking glasses, towels, and lip balm. Treatment for cold sores includes antiviral medications and home remedies such as using ice, avoiding spicy foods, and keeping the area clean.
