Chlorosis

Chlorosis is a condition in which a patient experiences an abnormally low level of hemoglobin in the blood. It is typically caused by a deficiency of iron in the body, but may also be caused by deficiencies of other nutrients such as folic acid or vitamin B12. It is a condition that affects mainly young women, but can also affect men and children. The main symptom of chlorosis is a pale skin color. Other symptoms may include fatigue, shortness of breath, and a weak or irregular pulse. In order to diagnose chlorosis, a doctor will take a blood sample to measure the level of hemoglobin. If the hemoglobin level is lower than normal, then the patient is considered to have chlorosis. Treatment typically involves taking iron supplements and other nutritional supplements as needed, as well as making dietary changes to ensure a balanced diet. If the condition is severe, then a doctor may prescribe a blood transfusion. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove any underlying cause of the condition, such as removal of the spleen.
