Cancer pharynx
The pharynx is a long tubular organ located in the throat that connects the mouth to the esophagus and larynx. It is divided into three areas: the nasopharynx, the oropharynx, and the laryngopharynx. Medical cancer of the pharynx is a type of cancer that affects the tissues of the pharynx. It can occur in any of the three parts of the pharynx, and is more common in men than women. Medical cancer of the pharynx is caused by the abnormal growth of cells in the pharynx. It is usually caused by smoking and alcohol use, as well as certain types of viruses and bacteria. Other risk factors include a weakened immune system, a history of radiation therapy, and a family history of the disease. The symptoms of medical cancer of the pharynx may include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, a lump in the neck, hoarseness, and ear pain. If the cancer is diagnosed early, it can often be treated successfully with surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy. Treatment will depend on the size and location of the tumor, as well as the stage of the cancer.
