Bronchospasm
Bronchospasm is a medical term that refers to the tightening of the muscles that line the walls of the bronchial tubes. This tightening of the muscles causes a narrowing of the airways in the lungs, making it more difficult for air to move in and out. This can lead to wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Bronchospasm can be caused by a variety of factors, including allergies, exposure to irritants, stress and certain medications. Treatment usually involves medications that relax the bronchial muscles, such as bronchodilators, and reducing exposure to triggers. In more severe cases, supplemental oxygen may be needed.
