Borborygmus

Borborygmus is the name given to the rumbling sound that can be heard in a person's abdomen. It is created by the contraction of the gastrointestinal muscles which push gas and fluid through the intestines. This sound is typically heard as a low-pitched gurgling or rumbling and is quite common in healthy individuals. It can be momentary or continuous and can be heard through a stethoscope. It is often referred to as “stomach growling” or “gurgling stomach”. The presence of borborygmus is usually a sign of normal digestive processes taking place and is not necessarily a sign of an underlying health issue. However, if the sound is accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain or cramping, it may indicate that something is wrong. In these cases, it is important to seek medical attention. Additionally, if borborygmus is heard in a newborn baby, this could be a sign of an obstruction or other medical emergency and should be evaluated by a medical professional.
