Biliary Dyskinesia

Biliary Dyskinesia is a disorder of the gallbladder and bile ducts that results in decreased or absent contractions of the gallbladder, or spasm of the bile ducts. This can lead to decreased or absent emptying of the gallbladder, which can cause problems with digestion and absorption of fats. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, and jaundice. The diagnosis of biliary dyskinesia is made through a combination of medical history, physical exam, and imaging studies such as an ultrasound or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Treatment may include lifestyle modifications such as diet changes, avoidance of fatty foods, weight loss, and medications to relax the muscles of the bile ducts. Surgery may be necessary in some cases.
