Asthma
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways. It causes the airways to become narrowed and inflamed, making breathing difficult and leading to episodes of breathlessness, coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. The inflammation of the airways is caused by the release of inflammatory substances such as histamine, leukotrienes, and cytokines. This inflammation can result in an increase in mucus production, which further narrows the airways and makes breathing difficult. Asthma can be triggered by a variety of factors including allergens, air pollutants, stress, and exercise. Treatment for asthma includes medications such as bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory drugs, as well as lifestyle modifications such as avoiding triggers and maintaining good air quality. Asthma can be a serious and potentially life-threatening condition, so it is important to seek medical attention right away if symptoms worsen or persist.
