Ascites
Ascites is the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity. It is caused by an imbalance in hydrostatic and oncotic pressure, resulting in the movement of fluid from the vascular space into the peritoneal space. It is most commonly seen in people with cirrhosis, congestive heart failure, and nephrotic syndrome. Symptoms may include abdominal swelling, shortness of breath, and abdominal pain. Diagnosis is typically made through physical examination and imaging. Treatment typically involves lifestyle modifications and medications to reduce fluid accumulation. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the fluid.
