Agitation
Medical agitation is a symptom of an underlying medical condition and is characterized by restlessness, irritability, or extreme emotional distress. It is a common symptom of many mental health disorders, including anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, and substance use disorders. It can also be caused by physical illnesses or the side effects of certain medications. Agitation can manifest in different ways, including pacing, restlessness, outbursts, increased verbal or physical aggression, and disruptive or aggressive behavior. The severity of medical agitation can vary from mild to severe. In severe cases, agitation can lead to self-harm or harm to others. Agitation can be dangerous and should be managed appropriately by a medical professional. Treatment typically involves identifying and managing the underlying condition, as well as providing medications and therapy to reduce the symptoms of agitation.
