Iprazochrome

Iprazochrome is a combination antibiotic medicine that is used to treat bacterial infections. It contains two active ingredients: pipazethate hydrochloride and chloramphenicol. This medicine is typically used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, eyes, ears, throat, nose, and urinary tract. It is also used to treat some cases of bronchitis and pneumonia. Iprazochrome is also an antimigraine agent used for prophylaxis of the attacks.

Iprazochrome is a medication used for two primary purposes:

  • Prophylaxis of Migraines: It helps prevent the occurrence of migraine headaches.
  • Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy: In individuals with type 2 diabetes, it can aid in both managing and preventing diabetic retinopathy, a complication affecting the eye due to diabetes.

Here's a closer look at Iprazochrome:

Type: Antimigraine agent and anti-vascular permeability agent

Mechanism of Action:

  • Serotonin Antagonist: It primarily works by blocking specific serotonin receptors (particularly 5-HT2 receptors) which are believed to be involved in migraine initiation.
  • Vasoprotective effect: Iprazochrome also stabilizes blood vessels, reducing their fragility and permeability, potentially contributing to its effectiveness in diabetic retinopathy.

Administration: Iprazochrome is typically administered orally as a tablet.

Trade Names: Divascan (among others)

Important Considerations:

  • Limited availability: Iprazochrome is not widely available globally and its use might be restricted due to the emergence of other treatment options for both migraines and diabetic retinopathy.
  • Potential side effects: While generally well-tolerated, some common side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fatigue.
  • Drug interactions: Iprazochrome can interact with certain other medications, so it's crucial to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking before starting Iprazochrome.
