Fezolinetant

Fezolinetant (INN, also known as AZD-5069) is a novel, non-steroidal, selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) developed by AstraZeneca for the treatment of menopausal symptoms and female sexual dysfunction. It works by targeting specific estrogen receptors in the body to reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness associated with menopause. In addition, it may help to improve mood and sexual desire in postmenopausal women. Fezolinetant has been studied in clinical trials and is currently in Phase III clinical development.

Fezolinetant is a medication specifically targeted towards treating hot flashes, also known as vasomotor symptoms, that occur during menopause. Here's a breakdown of some key points about Fezolinetant:

  • Type of Drug: It's a small molecule, orally administered medication that acts selectively to block neurokinin-3 (NK3) receptors. This makes it the first of its class (NK3 receptor antagonist) to be FDA-approved for treating hot flashes.
  • Mechanism of Action: Fezolinetant works by binding to and inactivating NK3 receptors, which play a role in the brain's regulation of body temperature. By blocking these receptors, it helps reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes.
  • Administration: It's taken as a pill once daily, with or without food.
  • Approval and Availability: Fezolinetant was approved for medical use in the United States in May 2023 and the European Union in December 2023. It's sold under the brand name Veozah among others.
  • Side Effects: Some common side effects include abdominal pain, diarrhea, trouble sleeping (insomnia), back pain, and surprisingly, occasional hot flashes themselves. It can also lead to elevated liver enzymes in some people.
