Dalfopristin

Dalfopristin is an antibiotic medication used to treat certain bacterial infections. It is used in combination with another antibiotic, quinupristin, to treat infections caused by certain bacteria. Dalfopristin works by stopping the bacteria from reproducing and spreading. It is typically used for skin infections and for infections caused by Streptococcus species. Dalfopristin is not effective against viruses and should not be used to treat viral infections.

Dalfopristin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic belonging to a class of drugs called streptogramins. It is not typically used alone, but rather in combination with another antibiotic called quinupristin. This combination is sold under the brand name Synercid.

Dalfopristin and quinupristin are used together to treat serious or life-threatening infections caused by certain types of bacteria, including:

  • Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREF)
  • Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA)
  • Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus)

These antibiotics work by stopping the growth of bacteria. They are only effective against certain types of bacteria and will not work for all infections.
