Brilliant Black BN is not exactly a medical substance. It is a synthetic black dye also known as:

It is used in some foods and beverages to achieve a black or dark gray color.
Brilliant Black BN is approved for use as a food additive in the European Union but has been banned in the United States and Japan due to safety concerns.
