Zofenopril

Zofenopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people with high blood pressure and coronary artery disease. It works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily and the heart does not have to pump as hard. Zofenopril is available in tablet form and should be taken with a full glass of water, with or without food.

Zofenopril is a medication you likely won't encounter very often these days. Here's why:

  • Function: Zofenopril belonged to a class of drugs called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. ACE inhibitors help relax blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily and lowering blood pressure.
  • Medical Use: In the past, it was primarily used to treat mild to moderate essential hypertension, which is high blood pressure.
  • Limited Availability: While it may still be available in some countries, Zofenopril has largely been replaced by other, newer ACE inhibitors with similar effectiveness and potentially fewer side effects.

Here's some additional information about Zofenopril:

  • How it Worked: ACE inhibitors like Zofenopril work by preventing the conversion of a substance called angiotensin I to angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a powerful chemical that constricts blood vessels, raising blood pressure. By inhibiting this conversion, Zofenopril allowed blood vessels to relax and lowered blood pressure.
  • Side Effects: Like other ACE inhibitors, Zofenopril could cause side effects such as cough, dizziness, headache, fatigue, and nausea.
  • Alternatives: There are many other ACE inhibitors available today, some of which may be better tolerated or have a longer duration of action. Examples include lisinopril, enalapril, and ramipril.
