Valnemulin

Valnemulin is a veterinary antibiotic and antiparasitic medication used in livestock and poultry. It is a semi-synthetic tetracycline derivative, and belongs to the group of tetracyclines antibiotics. It works by inhibiting the bacterial protein synthesis, therefore preventing the growth of bacteria. Valnemulin is used to treat and prevent bacterial infections in animals such as bovine respiratory disease, mastitis, and salmonellosis. It is also used to treat and prevent parasitic infections such as swine dysentery, coccidiosis, and necrotic enteritis.

Valnemulin is an antibiotic, but it's important to note that it's for veterinary use only. Here's a breakdown of what it is and how it works:

  • Type of antibiotic: Valnemulin belongs to the pleuromutilin group of antibiotics.
  • What it treats: This antibiotic is used to treat bacterial infections in pigs, specifically those affecting the intestines (swine dysentery, ileitis, colitis) and lungs (pneumonia). It can also help prevent intestinal infections in swine.
  • Mode of action: Valnemulin works by interfering with bacteria's protein production process. It binds to a specific part of the bacteria's ribosome, essentially halting protein synthesis and crippling the bacteria's ability to function.

Some additional points about Valnemulin:

  • It's effective against a range of bacteria commonly found in pigs, including Mycoplasma and Brachyspira species.
  • It has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of Mycoplasma bovis infection in calves.
